Day 28 of February: Starting a little early

Although technically March doesn’t start until tomorrow, my Breathe Journal does 4 week cycles which means technical the next cycle has begun.  With that in mind, I thought it could do no harm to kick things off a little early.  And the Breathe Journal makes you select what you are doing on a week by week basis, so here are the fun things I will focus on this week*:

  • Picking out and listening to a fun audio book
  • Go to the cinema (The Viceroy is out on Friday and I’d really like to see it)
  • Lazy reading on the couch day
  • Horse back riding on Sunday as always
  • A massage – scheduled for Thursday

Tonight I have selected my fun audiobook.  It is Engulfed by David Sedaris.  I love David Sedaris ever since I heard him on NPR probably 15-20 years ago now. He holds a very special place in my heart too because he first lived with his partner in Paris and now they lived in London.  I listened to him on the BBC one day talking about getting his Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Citizenship, just like I had done.  It was, of course, hilarious but particularly poignant for myself and other immigrants.

Another special place David Sedaris holds in my heart is from around just after my dad died, and my mother and I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything. Since it was close to Christmas, and we didn’t want to give presents because it was just too much that year,  we peeled ourselves off the couch and forced ourselves to go to a theatrical performance.  It was a two part performance.  The second part was A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote.  My mother wanted to see that in particular.  She likes to watch sad things when she was sad.  But it was the first part that spoke to me.  It was SantaLand Diaries by David Sedaris.  I had not heard his work in a long time and even though it wasn’t him performing it, I laughed for the first time with David during his epic battles as a Christmas elf.  It pulled me from the shadows of my own mind in a way very little else could at that time. So, I salute you now Mr Sedaris for the time you pulled me away from the dark, by purchasing your audio book.  May we have many good laughs together this week.

*Please note that I am girl who leads by feeling so if I don’t feel like any of these things the I reserve the right to do what makes me happy in the moment or on the day.
